  • Hi there,

    Welcome to MSDN forum.

Could you tell me if there are any errors when your VS Installer doesn’t work? You could try to run the
vs_installershell.exe file to launch your VS Installer:
    C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft Visual StudioInstaller
    .

In addition, when uninstalling the Visual Studio, the Visual Studio in Apps and features will be removed together. From looking at your logs, it seems that it is not uninstalled cleanly. Please have a try with the following:

    1. Manually delete any leftover install and cache folder you previously installed to

    C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft Visual Studio

    %programdata%Microsoftvisualstudiopackages

    2. Delete the setup registry key, which was set when you first installed:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftVisualStudioSetup

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftVisualStudioSetup

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWOW6432NodeMicrosoftVisualStudioSetup

Then, please re-download the Visual Studio from
Microsoft Site and try again. Notice that please ensure that your Windows Updates are up-to-date and temporarily turn off any anti-virus software before installation.

Hope it helps and any feedback will be expected.

    Sincerely,

    Anna

  • Hi there,

    Does it work for you?

In addition to the suggestion above, you could try to restart your Windows and check if you have some 3rd party extensions installed on your computer. If you can find them, please temporarily disable or uninstall  them before running your Visual Studio
    Installer.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

  • Hello,

I tried the suggested steps, but it still didn’t work

What do you mean by 3rd party extensions? I did disable my internet browser extensions. I disabled windows Defender XD (the only antivirus I have).

  • Could you tell me if there are any errors when your VS Installer doesn’t work? You could try to run the
vs_installershell.exe file to launch your VS Installer:
    C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft Visual StudioInstaller
    .

No there isn’t any error window popping up, it just won’t launch.

Te installation at first appears to go correctly, but when the loading bars finish nothing happens. ( Same thing using the vs_installershell.exe
    )

  • 1. Manually delete any leftover install and cache folder you previously installed to

    C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft Visual Studio

    %programdata%Microsoftvisualstudiopackages

    2. Delete the setup registry key, which was set when you first installed:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftVisualStudioSetup

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftVisualStudioSetup

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWOW6432NodeMicrosoftVisualStudioSetup

    • I removed the ‘packages’ folder even though it was empty.
    • I didn’t find The fist registry key ( in Policies folder )
    • The next two folders didn’t contain any ‘setup’ folder or file so I just removed the whole VisualStudio folder.
  • Hi there,

    Thanks for your feedback!

What about this issue now? Is it resolved?

    If it persists, please
perform a clean boot and try again.

In addition, you could go to Windows Settings, search for Edit environment variables for your account, click on Environment Variables to check if you have
NODE_OPTIONS environment variable. If you can find it, please remove it.

If all above doesn’t work, you could upload the latest installation logs. Please download and run this
collect.exe tool, go to %temp% folder and find the vslogs.zip file, upload it to
https://onedrive.live.com/ and share the link in here. Thanks for your understanding.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Sincerely,

    Anna

  • Hi,

Thank you very much for your responses, I tried all the suggested solutions you said, but none worked.

I have no NODE_OPTIONS variable on my environment variables.

Here is the installations log https://1drv.ms/u/s!AnMiBNzhiHbsasJwKaiIXW7A29E?e=rb5e3Y

    Thank you again.

  • Hi there,

Please have a try with the following steps: open Windows Settings ( Windows + I ) > Go to Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Windows Update > Run the troubleshooter, which attempts to identify the problems that prevent your computer from
    downloading and installing Windows Updates.

    Then, reboot your computer and
    repair the .NET Framework.

By the way, you can also try to launch other apps and check if the same situation occurs.

    Best regards,

    Anna

There can be some troubles with the certificates on vs_installer.exe and vs_installershell.exe. Installing this KB3004394 may help.

I’ve just had the same issue. I read about renaming the folder ‘/installer’ but it didn’t work for me. I ended removing the file ‘vs_installer.exe’ and I used one of the down-loaders.

I hope it helps.

I’ve had the exact same problem this evening while trying to install Visual Studio 2019 Community Edition on my laptop (Windows 10 Pro Build 19042). After nearly one hour of desperately trying out various scenarios (including messing with Component Services and adding my user to Local Access rights for COM+ Apps), I got it to work by simply moving the installer file from my «Downloads» folder to another place on the disk. Then, it worked.

That pointed out the installer is unable to start if run from a path/folder that has UTF-8 characters in its name (I was using «C:UsersDragoșDownloads» initially). Since this proved to reproduce each time I placed the installer in any folder containing UTF-8 chars, I filed a bug report at Microsoft: https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/t/Visual-Studio-2019-installer-does-not-st/1411874

I do not know if this scenario matches your context, but anyhow, I hope it helps somebody along the way.

I first tried renaming the vs_installer.exe to vs_installer.old, and that did not work for me. When I unchecked the «Keep download cache after the installation» on the Installation tab, then the Close button changed to Modify.

In my case, the issue was that I have downloaded and launched the installer to a user folder that contains non-English characters. Moving the installer to another folder fixed the issue. I´ve diagnosed the issue by looking into an installer log file in C:Users<username>AppDataLocalTempdd_vs_professional__143315035.1628536728_decompression_log.txt.

I had exactly this problem. Same version of Windows 10. I tried both vs_community.exe and vs_professional.exe. On a Microsoft Surface Pro 4. The installer launches, a brief unpacking screen appears, that vanishes, and you’re left with the task manager showing the installer but no user interface. I tried numerous different suggestions from Googling as well as the Collect.exe tool. None of that helped. Someone had a similar problem that hinted that a display could cause the problem. My Surface had Duet installed, which allows you to use an iPad as a second monitor. Uninstalling that allowed Visual Studio to install normally. Apparently the Visual Studio installer is finicky about displays so if you have any unusual display drivers, or screen sharing utilities, they should be removed to allow installing. I suspect that the driver or utility could be put back after installation.

At first you need to download this tool Event Collect for visual studio, open your CMD as administrator, then run Collect.exe , after that you need to run your visual studio installer in the event of an error you will find and file named C:Users{username}AppDataLocalTempVSSetupEvents.txt that you can check to see the error messages.

For more details you can check documentation .

My case is very embarrassing for Microsoft. I downloaded Visual Studio Setup and started it right away from browser. It was opened and then immediately closed. Nothing I could read on the Internet about this problem was not helping. Then I did one very simple thing. Moved setup from original location: C:Users(user name)Downloads, to c:Temp -> worked like a charm. The thing is that my user name contains international characters (plus containing a space). All in all 21. century, full unicode support everywhere, but not in windows. Really embarrassing.

Visual Studio 2019 Installer doesn’t start

I lost time about something I shouldn’t have, I couldn’t install vscode studio 2019 (I’ve installed it on multiple machines before).

I don’t know exactly why, observed there might be something in my folder blocking it, I just moved it to a new folder and I could install. Good luck and don’t make the same mistake as me

Question

Issue: How to fix Visual Studio 2022 installation error in Windows?

Hello. I tried installing Visual Studio 2022 on my Windows 10 computer but after installation, I get the error: “Couldn’t install Microsoft.NetCore.HostPath.” Are there any solutions?

Solved Answer

Microsoft Visual Studio is an IDE (integrated development environment)[1] made by Microsoft and used for different types of software development such as computer programs, websites, web apps, web services, and mobile apps. Visual Studio supports 36 different programming languages including C, C++, C++/CLI, Visual Basic .NET, C#, F#, JavaScript, TypeScript, XML, XSLT, HTML, and CSS. Support for other languages is available via plug-ins.

Using Visual Studio programmers can:

  • Navigate, write, and fix your code fast
  • Debug, profile, and diagnose problems
  • Write code with testing tools.
  • Use version control, and collaborate efficiently

As of 8 November 2021, the current production-ready Visual Studio version is 2022, with older versions such as 2013 and 2015 on Extended Support, and 2017 and 2019 on Mainstream Support.[2] However, some users have experienced issues when trying to install the latest Visual Studio version. Many of them receive installation errors, such as Couldn’t install Microsoft.NetCore.HostPath.”

There are many possibilities of what could be causing this error, so we recommend using a repair tool like RestoroMac Washing Machine X9 that can fix underlying Windows problems such as various system errors, BSoDs,[3] registry issues, and corrupted files automatically. By using it, you may also avoid a lengthy troubleshooting process.

If you experience an error and cannot repair or uninstall Visual Studio, you can run the InstallCleanup.exe tool to remove installation files and product information for all installed instances of Visual Studio 2017, Visual Studio 2019, or Visual Studio 2022.

Use the InstallCleanup tool only as a last resort if repair or uninstall fails. This tool might uninstall features from other Visual Studio installations or other products, which then might also need to be repaired or reinstalled. You can use either of the following command-line switches with the InstallCleanup.exe tool:

-i [version] This switch is the default if no other switch is passed. It removes only the main installation directory and product information. Use this switch if you intend to reinstall the same version of Visual Studio after you run the InstallCleanup.exe tool. If a [version] value is specified, only products with a version that start with this string value will be removed.
-f This switch removes the main installation directory, product information, and most other features installed outside the installation directory, that might also be shared with other Visual Studio installations or other products. Use this switch if you intend to remove Visual Studio without reinstalling it later.
  • Close the Visual Studio Installer
  • Type cmd in the search box
  • Right-click Command Prompt, and then choose Run as administrator
  • Enter the full path of the InstallCleanup.exe tool and add the command-line switch you prefer. By default, the path of the tool is as follows. The double quotes enclose a command containing spaces:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\Installer\InstallCleanup.exe

  • For example, use the switch -i 17 with InstallCleanup.exe to remove all 17 versioned products
  • Rerun the Visual Studio Installer bootstrapper. You might find the bootstrapper in your Downloads folder with a file name that matches a vs_[Visual Studio edition]__*.exe pattern. Or, you can download the bootstrapper for your edition of Visual Studio from the Visual Studio downloads page.
  • Try to reinstall Visual Studio
