«This application could not be started» error when running a .NET Framework application

When you attempt to run a .NET Framework application, you may receive the «This application could not be started» error message. When this error is caused by an installed version of .NET Framework not being detected, or by .NET Framework being corrupted, use this article to try to solve that problem.

If you still can’t run the application after completing all the steps in this article, then the issue may be caused by some other reason, like a corrupted file system, missing dependencies, or a problem with the application. In that case, you can try contacting the app publisher or post a question to Microsoft Support Community or Microsoft Q&A for more help.

How to fix the error

To address this issue so that you can run your application, do the following:

  1. Download the .NET Framework Repair Tool (NetFxRepairTool.exe). The tool runs automatically when the download completes.

  2. If the .NET Framework Repair Tool recommends any additional action, such as those shown in the following figure, select Next.

  3. The .NET Framework Repair Tools displays a dialog box shown in the following figure to indicate that changes are complete. Leave the dialog box open while you to try rerun your application. This should succeed if the .NET Framework Repair Tool has identified and corrected a corrupted .NET Framework installation.

  4. If your application runs successfully, select the Finish button. Otherwise, select the Next button.

  5. If you selected the Next button, the .NET Framework Repair Tool displays a dialog box like the following. Select the Finish button to send diagnostic information to Microsoft.

  6. If you still cannot run the application, install the latest version of .NET Framework that’s supported by your version of Windows, as shown in the following table.

    Windows 10, Windows 10 November Update .NET Framework 4.6.2
    Windows 8.1 .NET Framework 4.8 Runtime

    Windows Vista SP2 .NET Framework 4.6

    [!NOTE]
    .NET Framework 4.8 is preinstalled on Windows 11 and Windows 10 May 2019 Update and later versions.

  7. Attempt to launch the application.

  8. In some cases, you may see a dialog box like the following, which asks you to install .NET Framework 3.5. Select Download and install this feature to install .NET Framework 3.5, then launch the application again.

Описание проблемы

Всё работало до момента когда я изменил версию .NET Framework на 4.7.2. После этого появилась такая ошибка при запуске:

This application requires one of the following versions of the .NET Framework:

.NET Framework, version=4.7.2

Do you want to install this .NET Framework version now?

Ошибка

Я подумал — фиг с ним, установил. Но нет, ничего не изменилось, всё ещё требуется установка. «Восстановил» в установщике, перезагрузил компьютер — ничего не помогло. Ошибка всё ещё тут. Нужная версия .NET Framework в списке программ есть.

Я бы не называл это решением проблемы. Я бы не называл бы даже это правильным выбором, потому что это именно уклонение от решения проблемы.

Тем не менее мои проблемы решила смена на более новую версию .NET Framework, а конкретно на уже установленную 4.8. Если кому-то интересно, как я «додумался» до этого, то меня на это натолкнуло вот это из оф. документации Microsoft (статья: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/framework/install/troubleshoot-blocked-installations-and-uninstallations)

Because the 4.x versions of the .NET Framework are in-place updates, you cannot install an earlier version of the .NET Framework 4.x on a system that already has a later version installed.

  • So yesterday my computer started to act up. It was behaving normally before this and I’m not quite sure what happened. Many programs as well as background processes bring up error messages on launch saying:

    This application requires one of the following versions of the .NET Framework:

    .NETFramework,Version=v4.0

    Do you want to install this .NET Framework version now?

    I click yes and it opens up a browser page that automatically downloads the .NET Framework version. However, when I try to install it says:

    Your installation will not occur. See below for reasons why.

    Details

    .NET Framework 4.6.1 or a later update is already installed on this computer.

    If it’s already installed, why are multiple programs and processes not functional? I’ve looked everywhere on google but can’t seem to find a working solution to my problem. I’ve tried finding and deleting the different .NET Framework versions, but
    this error message still pops up. (I feel like doing this caused many more problems than I originally had.)

    Please help?

  • You can check to see if your .NET Framework 4.0 is OK with this tool:

    Run the tool with .NET 4.0 selected, then check the last few lines of the tool log for the test app return code. If the return code is 0, your .NET 4.0 is correctly installed and configured.

    If the return code is not 0, the framework is corrupt and will have to be repaired. Repair procedures vary depending on your Windows version, so please share the version with us.
