  • From a document library I click on «Edit in Microsoft Excel (or Word) and the application is not open I get the error «The converter failed to to save the file».  It never opens the application and I’m returned to the document library.  If I already have the application it doesn’t generate the error.  I’m running Office 2007

  • Following up on my last.  The problem returned about once a week, it seemed just after patch Tuesday.  The 2007 compatability tool would run and create all sorts of strange behavior.  Then it dawned on me: The 2007 compatability
    tool is needed only for those on Office 2003.  This computer was on 2003 and recently upgraded to 2007.  For some reason when launching Excel from SharePoint would run the tool.  I removed the 2007 Compatability tool and now everything
    work as required.

I created an excel file using OpenXML. But when I try to open the created xlsx, this error message was displayed.
«The converter failed to save the file»

I already installed this «FileFormatConverters.exe»

Here is my code:
Using sp As SpreadsheetDocument = SpreadsheetDocument.Create(«C:OpenXML.xlsx», SpreadsheetDocumentType.Workbook)
Dim wBookPart As WorkbookPart = sp.AddWorkbookPart

        Dim wBook As Workbook = New Workbook

        Dim sheet As Sheet = New Sheet
        Dim sheets As Sheets = New Sheets

        sheet.Name = "TestSheet"
        sheet.Id = "r1d1"
        sheets.Append(sheet)

        wBook.Append(sheets)
        wBookPart.Workbook = wBook

        Dim wSheetPart As WorksheetPart
        wSheetPart = wBookPart.AddNewPart(Of WorksheetPart)("r1d1")

        Dim wSheet As Worksheet = New Worksheet
        Dim sData As SheetData = New SheetData

        Dim row1 As Row = New Row
        Dim cell1 As Cell = New Cell
        cell1.DataType = CellValues.InlineString
        cell1.CellReference = "A1"

        Dim iString As InlineString = New InlineString
        Dim txt As Text = New Text
        txt.Text = "hello test"
        iString.Append(txt)
        cell1.Append(iString)
        row1.Append(cell1)

        sData.Append(row1)
        wSheet.Append(sData)
        wSheetPart.Worksheet = wSheet

        sp.WorkbookPart.Workbook.Save()
    End Using

I’m trying to use the 2007 file converter for 2003, and I keep getting
«converter failed to save the file» error everytime I try to open a 2007 file
— prior to this it tells me that it cannot find the file, then trys to
convert it («File conversion in progress»), then gives me «converter failed
to save the file»… All the updates are installed — what’s going wrong…!

Microsoft gives no clues on this…

Just, a thought but have you tried cleaning out the Temporary Internet
Files? (Control Panel, Internet Options, General, Delete files)

Does the file actually reside in a folder you have rights to? If an
e-mail attachment, have you saved it first? Is your anti-virus
interfering and attempting to scan the file, and thereby locking it out?

Check to be sure the default program to open the file is the program that is
supposed to be used. Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc. The problem I ran into was
because the file was trying to open with XML Editor, Not Excel.

Could the file be too big? I’m having the same trouble, but I’m trying to
open a really large file.

Hello everyone,
i found and tested a permenant fix for the issue of when someone wit
office excel2003 tries to open an .xlsm file from 2007, they get
converter failed to saveopen the file error.

check your excel 2003 version. It has to be (11.8307.8221) sp3

If not, do office 2003 updates from microsoft’s website until you ar
at this version and Presto…..another issue done!

Alanicky,

First, thanks for the reply, but I am thinking your advice was fo
Gallagher
Second, the trouble I’m having is not necessarily PowerPoint related
but I get your drift and went and double checked all file types relate
to MS Office. All are pointing where they should be. There is not
choice between 2003 and 2007, just Microsoft Powerpoint (or Excel, a
the case may be)

Anyone else have any ideas

Your setting may be pointed correctly but may not be working properly.
Change some, save, then reset to default settings. When I could no
open a file I tried downloading the 2007 and the 2003 versions. The
are both now on my computer. I now have 2 PP viewers but they don’t sa
which is 2003 or 2007. I then clicked the file I wanted to open. Whe
it didn’t work, I clicked change and then picked the other one. Tha
worked for me

I tried saving files as opening with a different program, saving, the
switching back, and still does not work. I don’t have the option o
having 2007 & 2003 on this system since it is a work system, so can’
try your other option. Thanks for your efforts though. :-

The fix is simple..
— Uninstall Compatibility Pack for the 2007 Office system
and re-install

When opening a file with the converter, it saves it in
%userprofile%Local SettingsTemp. You could also try to clean out that
directory and then restart your computer.

Right click, properties, uncheck Read Only.

Or, Open the file using using MS word 2003 and save it as Ms 2003-200
document.

Download portable MS word 2003

Can anyone help with this question.
A user checked out a Word 2007 document from SharePoint 2007, modified
saved and checked the document back in. All appears OK.
However when the user selected Save As the following message appeared
-The Converter failed to save the file.-

Any suggestions why this appeared. It doesn’t happen for other users, s
may be his pc settings.

Many thanks

Ask a Question

Amol Ghuge’s SharePoint Blog

This worked for me, even though the diagnostics said nothing was found, changed, or fixed.

I do agree with all of the ideas you’ve offered on your post. They’re very convincing and can definitely work.

Nonetheless, the posts are too brief for novices. May just you please lengthen them a
bit from subsequent time? Thank you for the post.

This post is simply fabulous! Thanks Amol.

Your feedback is always appreciated. I will try to reply to your queries as soon as possible- Amol Ghuge

How to Fix ‘Converter Failed to Save File’ with Excel 2016

How to Fix ‘Converter Failed to Save File’ with Excel 2016

I recently upgraded to Office 2016 on my Windows 10 desktop and was getting the error “Converter failed to save file” when double clicking on the file along with an “There was a problem sending the command to the program error” every time. I finally had enough with the annoyance to troubleshoot it and figured out a solve.

If you have the same issue, here’s how to fix it:

  1. Open your Default Programs configuration from the Control Panel. On Windows 10, you can hit start, type Default Programs, and it’ll open the app.
  2. Scroll down the list until you get to the Excel formats (XLS):
    Default Programs
  3. If you see anything other than Excel as the default, you’ll need to change the default to Excel. For me, the issue was the Open XML Converter not being installed anymore after upgrading to 2016. To change the default, select the format, click the “Change Program” button and select Excel 2016 from the list of apps that pops up and click OK to set the association:
    App Select
  4. You’ll need to do this for each format in the list to correct it. The most common formats you’ll use are XLS, XLSX, & XLT.

I have office 2013 and I’m trying to open a word 2007 .docx doc for a class I’m taking and it says «the converter failed to save the file» but saves it to downloads, then when I open with word 2013 it says it can’t open it because it’s corrupted.

The weird thing is that I emailed the doc to my work email and opened it just fine on my work computer (my work computer has office 2010). I saved the doc to my work computer and sent it to my personal email and it word opened it from my personal email just fine. Mind you I didn’t change the file type or anything. I just sent it to one place, saved it and sent it back. However when I save the file to my computer and then email it to myself it won’t open, it only does it when it goes to my work PC first.
