Starbound has become surprisingly popular over the years thanks to just how much the game offers in terms of content. There are so many worlds to explore, so many areas to discover, things to build, and much more of the sort in the game which make it the favorite of many.

Despite there being so much to do, Starbound still manages to remain perfectly simple and doesn’t offer players too many troubles. This doesn’t mean that every moment with the game is perfect though, as occasional errors are to be expected. This includes the Starbound “exception caught in client main-loop error.

  1. Break Blocks Surrounding Spawn

This error message is one that usually appears only a few moments after players get into the game and their character spawns. While this first solution on the list may sound like an unlikely one, it has helped many players and could potentially help you as well if you’re playing multiplayer. There’s only one major step, and that’s to ask the players you’re playing with for help.

Just ask one of them to come near your spawn before you start playing and to break all surrounding blocks as you spawn. Now move around for a bit and there will be no error message, meaning that the issue is resolved. This is usually only a temporary solution though, with the ones given below usually being permanent ones.

  1. Delete Planet’s Files

If this issue has been occurring ever since you tried to restart the game after coming to a new planet, there is a very simple solution that will surely work. The only thing which needs to be done is going into the main storage for Starbound and finding the files related to the world you’re currently on. Simply delete all of these files and then restart the game.

Once that’s done, the planet will be reset. This can go two ways, one in which players will spawn back at their ship the next time they start the game and the other in which they’ll still be at the planet at the initial beam point. Either way, the issue will be solved and Starbound will now launch without presenting this error message again.

  1. Clear Mods

One last thing left to try out which should surely work is getting rid of all Starbound mods that players use. Deleting them all will surely fix the problem, but it will surely affect much of your progress as well. That’s why there’s a similar alternative to check the dates for the mods players have installed on their device.

Check the dates on the most recently added mods and try to remember the date this error message started appearing. Long story short, simply uninstall all mods download near the time this issue first started and that should fix it if you don’t want to delete every single mod.

  1. Playing in 1.0 with a couple of my friends on Multiplayer.
I join the game, wander around on a planet for a while, no issues for a few minutes, and then I’m booted from the server with the error below.

    • Exception caught in client main-loop (EofException) Failed to read main buffer in readFull, eof reached.

I try connecting again, but the same thing happens after a second or two. The third time crashed the game. The fourth time didn’t crash, but was otherwise identical to the first and second.

  2. Have I, I host a server with hamachi and after a certain time my friend also crash and can not return to the server. I told him to make another character and he was able to connect, but how is it that his character reconnects without bug?

Here is what is marked when it connects with its first character

exception caught in client main-loop( EofException) Failed to reach full buffer in readfull eof reached

  3. That error happens whenever I first beam down to a planet in a server. In the server I just kept rejoining like 20 times and then the world loaded and it was fine. I haven’t found any ingame resolutions except to just keep rejoining until it stops. If someone has an easier resolution, please tell. Thanks!

Note: Each time I join, the time between joining and the error occuring, seems to become a longer time away. It’s just enough for the world to start loading in those 3 seconds, and eventually it’ll be fine.

  4. i have the same problem. playing 1.01, it happens after an hour of playing, sometimes half an hour with the next character, seems not to be regular. changing a server, same problem there after short time of playing. only single player seems to be stable.

  5. Hi, I get the same error over and over again on my Debian Starbound Server…

  6. I’ve figured it out! Well, for my issue at least. I had the enhanced storage mod and the hoarder addon isn’t multiplayer friendly. I got rid of it and the eof stopped. Or it was a coincidence that it worked after I took out the mod. Good luck!

  7. Starmaster212, did you remove it from the server or only from the client or both client and server?

  8. I’m not good with any of this at all, but here’s what happened/I did.
1.) I had the Enhanced Storage mod
    2.) I joined BoundStar server
3.) I beamed down and there wasn’t anything except the biome background thing
4.) Game immediately crashed and had the error
5.) I got rid of the mod
6.) Either coincidence, or deleting the mod stopped the error and the world loaded
    7.) Yay no more error
Again, I’m not good with the «client error» crap.

  9. Fixed the problem for me, Thanks. I had one character go down and started another because I couldnt get my main working. After getting my secondary up it started crashing the same way. I uninstalled Enhanced Storage from Client side and I am able to connect again just fine. I also readded it and I am still able to connect. Not sure how long that will last though

  10. I’m having this issue with multiplayer as well, but I do not have enhanced storage installed.

  11. Probably until you beam down…
    — Post updated —

    Do you have any mods?

  12. I’m having this same problem. Can’t get into multiplayer server. I host the server myself. No mods installed.

Just reinstalled Starbound on my end, but no luck.

Exception caught in client main-loop (EofException) Failed to read full buffer in readFull, eof reached.

Can anyone help? This really sucks. I don’t want to wipe the universe, as my friends have been playing a ton.

    Please help!

  13. Uninstall. Your. Mods…

    Really this helped for me.

  14. As I said, I have no mods installed.

My issue turned out to be easy. Just had to restart the server because it was running 1.0 still and not the update.

  15. my friends have the same problem even with the exact SAME modlist.

  16. I have this same error, but it only happens when a well is placed on the planet.

  17. This happened to me twice. I found a work around the first time by deleting the most recent world file and losing the world progress. The second time it happened on my base building planet. So I renamed the most recent world file. Started the game again, this time i spawned in my same location in a fresh world, took a step to the left. I exited the game, deleted the newly generate world file, and named back my orignal world file. I restart, spawned a step to the left, uncrashed.

  18. i have starbound, latest version and i also have
    frackin universe
    pokeballs
    tiles and greebles
    advanced action spawn
    head hunting
    and im getting this error
    any ideas???:nuruhype:

  19. Take a look at https://steamcommunity.com/workshop/filedetails/discussion/731220462/2806204040002392779/

I used to encountered this error, but now it’s gone.

I looked my client error, it was just (EofException) Failed to read main buffer in readFull, eof reached.
And server don’t have any error.

But today I look at the begining of the server log, it was saying `…./211820/731220462 directory not found`, then I got it…Server don’t even load this mod! So I managed to fix it now.

Starbound exception caught in client main loop failed to read full buffered

— When beginning the game, I click “Start Game”, then select my character, the game screen appears (not Full Screen), I see the world and my character for a second and then the game gives this error:
“Exception caught in client main-loop (EofException) Failed to read full buffer in readFull, eof reached” with on “OK” button. If I click OK, it takes me back to the main menu. Quitting and restarting, even rebooting doesn’t help—the same thing happens.

You have 2 achievement errors which I don’t think are a big problem but you have a seriously big error before your client shutdown. Like 26 lines of error. I checked around the internet a bit and someone said they fixed that kind of error by removing enhanced storage. which you have.

You also seem to have it in 2 copies or something. I suggest you try to remove those and see what happens. But one thing is almost certain, your mods are clearly what’s crashing your game.

Starbound exception caught in client main loop failed to read full buffered

Hello, I have a problem. Today, I was in a planet and teleported back to my ship to sell stuff in the outpost. After that, I tried to teleport back to the planet but an error message appeared:

»Exception caught in clien main loop (EofException) Failed to read full buffer in readFull, eof reached»

I try to reload the game but the same error appears and it takes me back to the menu. Nevertheless, my character seems ok, because when it loads he appears, but the world isn’t able to load before the error appears.

How can I solve this? Thanks

i was thinking you could delete the planet file and go back to the planet see if it works,

i was thinking you could delete the planet file and go back to the planet see if it works,

Well, I know that there is a file for the character, a file for the ship, and a file for the universe, but deleting the universe i will be floating nowhere

Ok, there is a solution. This is for you, rut420, in case of that this happens again to you.
You need to go to the starbound folder, storage and universe. Then, you look for the archives ‘world’, and you delete them.
If you delete them all, you restart all the planets that you have visited, and they can change (ex. the planet where I had the problem now has meteorites), or if you know the coordinates of the planet that you want to delete, you delete it’s file and done, problem solved.

Nevertheless, from now on, I am going to be doing a lot of backup.
PS: Thanks by answering to my problem though

I’m playing on Fullscreen, thanks in advance for the help.

Well I don’t know what exactly is causing the crash (as you have multiple errors), but I am concerned about

Line 275: [14:53:01.547] [Error] No quest template found for id ‘divinerosekeychain’
Line 276: [14:53:01.560] [Error] No quest template found for id ‘EnhancedStorage2’

Line 278: [14:53:01.590] [Error] No quest template found for id ‘lionheartkeychain’

That shows up multiple times.

Having said that I notice

[14:49:27.548] [Info] Frackin’ Universe version 5.6.205

[14:49:27.651] [Error] Cannot set Steam achievement trashpet
[14:50:42.870] [Error] Exception caught in client main-loop

Judging from the time stamps, I think it may be a FU problem.

Exception caught in client main-loop (EofException) Failed to read full buffer in readFull, eof reached.

What mods are you running?

Most of the mods we were using were; Super Song Pack, Weapon Stats, Craftable Mech Energy Cell, Shareable Beds, Enhanced Matter Manipulator, and Extra Zoom Levels mods.

I tried playing on singleplayer with the same mods just now, and I recieved a different crash. I have started deleting some of the mods.

There is a weapon bug going around causing a «fatal error crash» it could very well be that, try deleting some of your weapons or cursoring over some of them and clicking it if the game crashes immediately as soon as you’ve switched to the weapon or picked it up with the cursor go ahead and trash it. It was something to do with the last update even effecting vanilla clients.

Otherwise all I can add to that is a lot of mods have become unuseable in multiplayer since the last update. Sorry can’t give ya anymore of a solid lead.

«Exception caught in client main-loop

Hey SB subreddit,

Me and my girlfriend hired a 4 player server on gameservers to play starbound together. But currently we are experiencing some technical difficulties.

The error we recieve is the following : «Exception caught in client main-loop (EofException) failed to read full buffer in readFull, eof reached». Often before this error we are experiencing «lags» with the server, with lags I mean that the world is slow in loading..During traveling the particles, monsters and trees just show up too late on the screen.

I searched the subreddit and the steam discussion group and was suprised to find that I could not find more than 1 post talking about the same problem. He said his problem was fixed with the last update. We are still experiencing it.

We are using the following mods, and also have these mods correctly installed on the server through FTP.

Mods: Perennial crops, Fracking races, Fracking universe, Weapon stats, One-handed torch, Improved containers, Xbawks character extender, Illuminated ores.

Is anyone else getting this problem, or has anyone found a solution?

Thanks in advance.
