After upgrading one of my home lab servers to VMware ESXi 6.7 Update 3, I’ve got the following error when trying to boot:

Shutting down firmware services…

Page allocation error: Out of resources

Failed to shutdown the boot services.

Unrecoverable error

After changing the boot mode from UEFI to “legacy only” in the BIOS, the ESXi host booted without the error.

VMware has confirmed that this is a bug. There is VMware community thread (link) about this bug and two other workarounds. When there will be a permanent fix available is unclear at the moment.

When i try to boot ESXi over UEFI PXE with default configuration load freeze with that message:

Shutting down firmware services...
Using 'simple offset' UEFI RTS mapping policy

The working fix for me, that i found in net:

  1. Boot installer via bootx64.efi with -U from ipxe
  2. Write norts=1 to /efi/boot.cfg

That fix it on all my servers: H3C, SuperMicro, HP

My configs:

boot.cfg

iPXE item:

boot || goto MENU

A large number of J1900 mining machines appeared in Xianyu. Seeing that the chassis is good, they started a B-type dual network card. After hard modification, it was successfully cracked into dual gigabit. So I thought about installing an ESXI6.7 to play a virtual machine.

Unexpectedly encountered a problem:

“Shutting down firmware services…

Using 'simple offset' UEFI RTS mapping policy

Relocating modules and starting up the kernel…”

I found relevant information on the Internet, and the solution is as follows:

1. There is a countdown before the ESXi installation starts. At this time, press Shift + O, add ignoreHeadless=TRUE after the displayed command, press Enter, and the installation can proceed normally. For the installation process, please refer to » ESXI Installation Process and Basic Configuration » «;
2. The following steps are to write this parameter value into the configuration, it will not be lost with restart;
3. When ESXi starts, click F2 to log in;
4. Under System Customization, enter Troubleshooting Options;
5. Enable ESXi Shell , and then press ESC all the way to return; (ssh ok)
6. In the main interface, press Alt + F1 to access the console;
7. Log in, enter and execute the following commands:

#Enter maintenance mode

vim-cmd /hostsvc/maintenance_mode_enter

#Check if the host is in maintenance mode

vim-cmd /hostsvc/hostsummary | grep inMaintenanceMode

#Set ESXI boot to ignore graphics card errors

esxcfg-advcfg --set-kernel "TRUE" ignoreHeadless

# check command

esxcfg-advcfg --get-kernel ignoreHeadless

#Exit maintenance mode

vim-cmd /hostsvc/maintenance_mode_exit

8. Enter exit to log out of the console;
9. Click Alt+F2 to return to the main interface of ESXi;
10. Disable ESXi Shell;
11. Finish.
