550 permission denied

#1

Post

by Noubish » 2022-08-18 18:41

So here’s the issue…

We’re connecting from an outside network (IC) to communicate with the FileZilla server and upload a file to a network drive on the server however every time after attempting to write the file it’s giving the 550 permission denied error.
I am able to connect from home to the server and successfully write a file via FileZilla using the same FTP details & SFTP configured

What we’ve done so far-
Verified user read/write permissions in the network folder
Correct permissions in FileZilla Server configuration
Open port 21 & 990 successfully able to connect outside
Granted the FTP account access in Computer management & tried the system admin account

The company states it’s most likely CHMOD/user permissions however I’ve gone over everything that I can think of, any help would be appreciated!

Please post a complete log.

Hey so I was able to successfully connect however I am getting the «TLS session of data connection not resumed» when extracting a file & the file is blank with no data inside of it. Originally I wasn’t able to successfully write the file however now it won’t send any data with it, see attached image below

Your used client must support the TLS session resumption feature, FileZilla Server requires it. That requirement cannot be relaxed.

This requirement is an important security measure. Not requiring resumption would leave the server vulnerable to data connection stealing attacks. As such, this requirement cannot be disabled.

Did you grant write permission in FileZilla Server itself?

Right now I test it on Filezilla Server 0.9.41. Everything worked like a charm! Could be an issue with TLS version. My printer use TLS 1.1, FZ accept minimum TLS1.2.

From the mount list I can see in the screenshot, it looks like you have no native path associated to the virtual root «/», but the scanner doesn’t move from the root itself, hence it tries to write a file where it has no permission to.

Try using a virtual path of just «/», rather than «/scan».

Thank you for everyone,
I saw that «Minimum allowed TLS version is now 1.2, added configuration option to restrict it further to 1.3» feature appeared first time from FZ 1.0.0-rc5 (2021-07-28). Can somebody, please, to send me a link with 1.0.0-rc4 (2021-07-19)?
I test it with FileZilla_Server-0_9_60_2 an worked even with FTP over TLS function activated.

This doesn’t have to do with TLS. Please read my post before this one in this thread.

Hello again,
Oibaf was right. After upgrade from 0.9.60 to 1.5.1, the default virtual path was set to «/», not to «/scan» as I set it firs time. In 0.9.## I did not saw the «virtual path» feature.
Thank you everyone!

Filezilla

C:Program Files (x86)FileZilla ServerFileZilla Server.xml

  • write_enable = ДА
  • anon_mkdir_write_enable = ДА

I suddenly get the error 550: Permission Denied in Filezilla when I try to create a new directory.

A few days ago I changed some settings on the server regarding ssl and imap settings, but I don’t think this has affected the FTP settings …

Anyhow, after long googling nothing seems to work. The main idea could be that the user hasn’t got permissions, but the interesting thing is that I can:

  • create files
  • delete files
  • delete directories

But not creating directories. I get the error «550 Permission denied» in the main directory and «550 access_log: No such file or directory» in the subdirectory.

Anyone knows where the error could be? Thanks

Use below parameter in vsftpd.conf to give permission to anonymous user or script in linux machine.

  • write_enable=YES
  • anon_mkdir_write_enable=YES

Assuming you are on Linux, Go up one directory, and see if the user has permissions there. For example:

Try setting the permissions on the directory to 777. If it works you know you have a problem with the permissions. DO NOT leave the directory at 777, it is not secure, just for quick testing. 755 is usually appropriate if you have everything set up correctly. You can also try adding the user to the group that owns the directory (you can do this through ls -l). This will tell you what user owns that.

I got a 550 using FTP with Filezilla because regular FTP didn’t have high enough permissions on my server.

I switched to an SSH/SFTP connection and that fixed it.

Filezilla project has a good piece on Securing your Windows Service installation. In essence:

Create User

  1. Close the Filezilla interface (if open)
  2. Stop the Filezilla service
  3. Create a User level (not Administrator level) Windows account for FileZilla service to run under, with «password never changes»
  4. In Services, open Filezilla properties, Log On tab and change to run with the new account

Folder Permissions

  1. Give Write permissions to the new user on C:Program Files (x86)FileZilla ServerFileZilla Server.xml
  2. If you use logging, set «Write» access to C:WindowsLogs
  3. On target FTP upload folders set «Full Control» to each topmost writable folder you want to use

Restart Service

If someone ended here searching for Command: PWD Response: 550 PWD: Permission denied instead, check the for the presence of .ftpaccess file in the home dir, in my case it was causing the error.

Hello. This is my first post, could really use some help.
I can see my server files on the client filezilla, and Download works fine, but I cannot upload files or make directories at all, get 550 permission denied for anything involving writing.

Server: Ubuntu 11 server (Asus PC) running vsftp
Client: Filezilla on MacOS snow leopard desktop.
Connection: local (client and server plugged into same router; for self-education only)
Accounts: Only 1 account, same name and password both client and server. ssh login works no problem

server configuration:
anonymous_enable=NO
local_enable=YES
write_enable=YES

When I try to drop a test file 80h_solenodon.jpg) into the directory /home/www, I get the following in the Filezilla log:
Command: USER chalo
Response: 331 Please specify the password.
Command: PASS *********
Response: 230 Login successful.
Command: OPTS UTF8 ON
Response: 200 Always in UTF8 mode.
Status: Connected
Status: Starting upload of /Users/chalo/Desktop/NatHisArchive/80h_solenodon.jpg
Command: CWD /home/www
Response: 250 Directory successfully changed.
Command: TYPE I
Response: 200 Switching to Binary mode.
Command: PASV
Response: 227 Entering Passive Mode (192,168,1,100,80,153).
Command: STOR 80h_solenodon.jpg
Response: 550 Permission denied.
Error: Critical file transfer error

If I attempt to make a new directory d in www using filezilla, I get the following log:

Command: MKD d
Response: 550 Permission denied.
Command: MKD /home/www/d
Response: 550 Permission denied.

Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong, or suggest further tests? I have checked this forum, and the usual cause of 550 errors was write permission not set correctly. This time, write is definitely on. Thanks.

550 Permission Denied

550 Permission Denied

#1 Post by skaboy607 » 2011-10-09 14:59

This is my first attempt at this so bare with me!

I wanted to share a folder on my computer with 5 other users, we are all working together on a master project for university. The drive would be on my home computer and the other users would need read/write/append access to it but delete.

I downloaded filezilla, allowed it through windows firewall. Created a host with no-ip. Set up the users that I wanted and gave them the required permissions in filezilla and shared only the folder on the drive that I want them to see.

I have been testing on another computer in the house to see if it works. I map a network drive to the ftp and access this way, I am able to view the files and open them but when I try to change the title of one of the files, it doesn’t work and comes up with a 550 permission denied error.

I have give the local user on the computer (me) full control of the shared directory and from my limited knowledge, I understood that when a user logs onto the ftp, they log on as me.

How can I solve this?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks. Adding that permission worked a treat. However I have a new problem now.

Another user that logs on through the mapped network drive needs to be able to cut and paste files from one directory to another. All the boxes are checked under the directory settings, but although there is the option to copy, when you right click in the proposed dir, the option to paste is greyed out.

Any ideas on this problem?

The FTP protocol does not support copying anything on the server. Only moving* is supported (Drag&Drop). Note that in case you use Windows Explorer, its Cut-Paste probably won’t work anyway, as it works using the local clipboard which isn’t available on the server.

*Actually it’s a simple relocation through a RNFR and RNTO operation, so Delete rights are required for both source and target.

Thanks for the replies. Thats not ideal but we’ll work around it for all the other functionality that this is giving us.

New problem: Once a user has taken a local copy, renamed it and then copied to the correct folder. They need to delete the original off the ftp, this doesnt work either. Comes up with a handle is invalid error.

Ok, I don’t understand that. It wasn’t working but I just replicated the situation to get the server logs and it works now. Weird.

Why does it show two of the same user logged on when they are logged in?

Would installing this setup that I have have any influence on the internet speed? It is installed on a home network.

Re: 550 Permission Denied

#9 Post by skaboy607 » 2011-10-10 22:04

Ok, so it did it again and this is the log. I’m no expert in this but I think it’s not remembering the password or something similar. As it is set up now, it is a mapped network drive with the box checked for ‘remember password’.

When I tried and it worked, I had just mapped the drive so it was still logged in. Does this sound right, it’s like it logs itself out then doesn’t remember the password?

Hey Guys,
I write small business software for a little extra income, and would like a way to update my software remotely for one of my clients. I’ve put Filezilla Server on the the server at their office and tried to connect from home, but it won’t properly upload.

This may be a problem with the way i set up the server, and if so i apologize for posting in the wrong forum. However, if anybody could provide me some insight as to what is going wrong, i’d really appreciate it.
Thanks

I just setup filezilla server and got the same problem.

Solution: Add the user System to the specified directory for that user.
And add modifying right for the user System.

Thanks for earlier posting: It had helped me

#11 Post by mac » 2008-06-27 12:03

Anyone has an idea how to solve this?

#12 Post by da chicken » 2008-06-27 19:59

The best option is to use a domain account. Then you simply grant the domain account the rights on the FTP server and file server as appropriate.

If you don’t have a domain, then you need to create a Windows local account on both the FTP server and the file server that have the same username and password and then grant each account rights on their respective machines appropriately.

Hi,
I’ve read the previous posts but I got the same problem (I want to map a netword shared directory into my FilezillaServer) but I can’t understand how make it!
Actually my Windows2003Server starts with «Administrator» user and «FilezillaServer FTP Server» service starts as Administrator user.
Logging in windows with this user I can browse the network directory after inserting the NAS user and password (is this the cause? Because Filezilla don’t know the NAS password also if the network dir is already mapped in a drive?).

If so, what can I to do to workaround this?

#14 Post by da chicken » 2008-06-28 01:14

Ok, here’s an example.

Let’s say I don’t have a domain. A domain would make life much easier, but the steps are largely the same.
I have two servers with Win2k3 installed.
One server has a hostname (computer name) of FTP1. This is the server where FileZilla Server is installed.
The second server has a hostname of FILE2. This server has a directory where we want to keep files, D:ftproot.

Step 1: We go log in to FTP1, and we create a Windows local user account to use as a service account.

Step 3: Configure the FileZilla Server Service on FTP1 to start using the FTP1FileZillaServerService account.

Step 4: Now let’s go log in to the file server, FILE2. Create a Windows local user account with the exact same name and the exact same password as the one you created on FTP1. You should now have FileZillaServerService on FTP1 and FILE2, both with the exact same password.

Step 5: Turn on File Sharing on the directory D:ftproot. Give the share a name (ftproot is fine). Grant the local user FILE2FileZillaServerService the Share Permission of Full Control, and the NTFS Permissions of Read, Read & Execute, Write, and Modify (granting Full Control is not necessary and carries security implications).

Step 6: Now go back to FTP1, and log on as FileZillaServerService. Open up Windows Explorer and browse to \FILE2. Right-click share we created (ftproot) and pick Map Network Drive. Give it a drive letter. Now you can configure FileZilla Server in the Control Interface to use the mapped network drive. You should be able to access the network drive, create files and folders and so on. It shouldn’t ask for a password or anything.

Warning: Mapped network drives are associated with user accounts when they’re logged on, not with service accounts. It’s very likely that if the user account FileZillaServerService is logged off the server that the network drive on FTP1 will no longer available. This will cause problems whenever you reboot FTP1 because you’ll have to go log in again to get your mapped drive back most likely. The FileZilla Server, however, will already have started at that point, and may have thrown an error because the file server appears to be inaccessible.

These kinds of problems are some of the reasons why it’s not recommended to do things this way. It will break, and probably often.

#15 Post by simoneqask » 2008-06-28 23:41

Hi,
thank you very much, now I understand witch was the problem and the relative solution!
Now it’s running!
If I understand well, it is because windows use the user that’s running the FileZilla Server Service to try access the network directory! So, in the s.o. where it would run the Filezilla Server, it has to create a user with the same username and password necessary to access to remote network directory shared, set it the grant to access the network (in the example, the fastest mode is to add it to «Administrator» group) and set the FileZilla Server Service to be executed with it.
In case there’s a domain it could be easier because users definition was centralized on the domain controller and the only thing necessary is to make the service run with a domain user that has permissions to access the network shared directory, right?

Thank you very much for fast and long explanation, it had helped me!!

550 Access denied

550 Access denied

#1 Post by sparky123 » 2010-01-25 09:52

I have filezilla server installed on a local pc.
I use coffeecup html editor on the same pc.
When i try to upload to local server from coffeecup, i get error 550 access denied.
I’ve enable write access in the server xml file with no success.
Running on Xp pro with permissions enabled for the folder in question.

I’ve also tried uploading to the server from a remote ftp client, this also failed with 550 access denied.
I’m not sure where the problem is originating from, filezilla or Xp OS.

Thanks to anyone who can help me.

This is not an FTP permission problem (in that case the error would be 550 Permission denied.)

1. FileZilla server runs under Windows account SYSTEM (LocalSystem). You must make sure SYSTEM has full control over the directories you share.
2. For a specific file, maybe this file is locked somehow by the OS (or another program such as a virus scanner). Check with a tool like Unlocker (Lockhunter for x64).

sudo chmod -R ftpuser:ftpuser /path/to/folder

Restart Service

sudo apt-get install vsftpd

sudo nano /etc/vsftpd.conf

listen=YES
local_enable=YES
write_enable=YES разрешим пользователям записывать файлы

sudo service vsftpd restart

sudo service vsftpd restart

550 Permission denied

550 Permission denied«.
550 Permission denied.

sudo chmod -R 777 /my_ftp_dir/

force_dot_files=YES

sudo service vsftpd restart

FTP is a simple method to upload files to the server.

Although, it is rather easy to transfer files, FTP users often get stuck with errors. One such FTP error is “550 No such file or directory“.

Broadly speaking, this error means that the file or folder do not exist.

As part of our Outsourced Technical Support Services, we regularly fix these type of FTP errors for our customers.

Today, we’ll see the causes for the error “FTP 550 no such file or directory” and how our Support Engineers fix them.

What is FTP 550 error?

Firstly, let’s get a quick idea on the FTP 550 error.

The 5xx error falls under the permanent negative completion reply status of the FTP server. And, it means that the FTP server did not accept the command and the requested action did not take place. Further more, x5x error denotes File system errors in FTP server.
Overall, the 550 error means the file was not found or there are access restrictions for the file.

Causes for “FTP 550 no such file or directory”

Recently, one of our customers reported trouble with FTP upload. The logs of his FTP session looked as shown below.

STATUS:> Transferring file "/mydir/home.html"...
COMMAND:> SIZE home.html
550 home.html: No such file.
STATUS:> Requested action not taken (e.g., file or directory not found, no access).
COMMAND:> CWD /mydir/home.html
550 /mydir/home.html: No such file or directory.

Here, the customer was trying to PUT the file home.html via FTP. And that resulted in the error.

Now, let’s see the top causes for the error.

1. Incorrect path

Usually, “FTP 550 no such file or directory” error happens when the customers try to upload files from the wrong directory.

For example, when the file is present in the folder /home/user/abc.html, an attempt to upload from the path /home will cause this error.

This error also happens when customer uses the relative path in FTP.

2. Permission problems

Similarly, wrong permission on the files or folders can also cause this 550 error. When the user do not have privileges on the file they are trying to access, it will report the 550 error.

Additionally, a typo in the file name will also lead to this error.

3. Wrong Mount points

Again, we often see FTP 550 errors when users trying to access files in the mounted file systems.

For instance, recently a customer complained about the problems accessing files via FTP. In his server, he had a mounted file system. But, this mount failed after a server reboot. And, when he tried to access a file in this mounted directory, it resulted in the error:

550 : No such file or directory

How to fix FTP 550 error?

Till now, we saw the various causes for the FTP 550 error. Let’s now have a look on how to fix it.

We already know that the underlying reason for the FTP 550 error could be file not residing at the path.

That’s why, our Support Engineers first check the exact path that the customer uses via FTP. We connect to the server via SSH and confirm the presence of the file. If the file is not found on the path, we advise customer on the correct path. Or, for file name typo issues, we educate customer on the exact file name.

We always encourage customers to use the absolute path of the file in FTP connections.

Similarly, we check the server mount points and confirm the availability of file system and its contents too.

[Are you getting 550 error while accessing files via FTP?  We can quickly fix it for you.]

Conclusion

In short, FTP error “550 no such file or directory” happens mainly when the file do not exist at the path, due to permission problems, etc. Today, we saw the top causes for the error and how our Support Engineers fix them.

Introduction

Out of the box, the ‘vsftpd’ server doesn’t allow you to write data to the server. To allow this, you must change the vsftpd configuration and then restart the service.

The Problem

After you’ve installed VSFTPD (on Ubuntu: ‘apt-get install vsftpd’) you can download files using FTP from your VSFTPD server. However, if you try to write files back to your server you get this error:

troy@bahamas:~$ sudo service vsftpd restart
vsftpd start/running, process 2694
troy@bahamas:~$ ftp bahamas
Connected to bahamas.
220 (vsFTPd 2.3.0)
Name (bahamas:troy): troy
331 Please specify the password.
Password:
230 Login successful.
Remote system type is UNIX.
Using binary mode to transfer files.

ftp> put troygeek.sql
local: troygeek.sql remote: troygeek.sql
200 PORT command successful. Consider using PASV.
550 Permission denied.
ftp>

The Solution

To solve this, edit your vsftpd.conf file:

sudo vi /etc/vsftpd.conf

…and uncomment the write_enable line to look like this:

# Uncomment this to enable any form of FTP write command.
write_enable=YES

Once uncommented, restart your VSFTPD service:

troy@bahamas:~$ sudo service vsftpd restart
vsftpd start/running, process 2704

…and you should now be able to write files to your FTP server. If you still have trouble, ensure you have the correct filesystem permissions for the user you are FTP’ing as.

Hello again,
Oibaf was right. After upgrade from 0.9.60 to 1.5.1, the default virtual path was set to «/», not to «/scan» as I set it firs time. In 0.9.## I did not saw the «virtual path» feature.
Thank you everyone!

Hi Guys,

again with problem about LAMP, now I am trying to setup the LAMP in another way, but I am having issues with VSFTP, I am unable to write but I don’t understand why. I configured my local user to write but this configuration seems to not work properly.

I have to write inside: /var/www/html as default directory by Apache2.

I gave these owners and these permissions to these folders:

Code: Select all

ls -l /var/www
total 4
drwxr-xr-x 2 root www-data 4096 May 21 00:51 html

I added my user to FTP group and the WWW-DATA:

Code: Select all

webby@web-server:~$ groups
webby cdrom floppy audio dip www-data video plugdev netdev bluetooth ftp

I am using this configuration:

Code: Select all

Any idea to solve this? Thanks

I have my instance of the Amazon AWS running, test page is up.

I am trying to SFTP the files to the server to display my website. I have Filezilla connected to the AWS server but when I try to move the files from my local machine to the /var/www/html directory, it says permission denied.

I just figured out I CAN move the files to the /home/ec2-user directory. So my files are on the server I guess. But when I try to move them from there to the /var/www/html directory, it still won’t move them, permission denied.

I’ve been researching this for approximately 2 hours now but I haven’t been able to locate the answer to this.

Any help is greatly appreciated, i’m so close! Haha

Thanks

if you are using centOs then use

sudo chown -R centos:centos /var/www/html

sudo chmod -R 755 /var/www/html

For Ubuntu

sudo chown -R ubuntu:ubuntu /var/www/html

sudo chmod -R 755 /var/www/html

For Amazon ami

sudo chown -R ec2-user:ec2-user /var/www/html

sudo chmod -R 755 /var/www/html

In my case the /var/www/html in not a directory but a symbolic link to the /var/app/current, so you should change the real directoy ie /var/app/current:

sudo chown -R ec2-user /var/app/current
sudo chmod -R 755 /var/app/current

I hope this save some of your times :)

To allow user ec2-user (Amazon AWS) write access to the public web directory (/var/app/current),
enter this command via Putty or Terminal, as the root user sudo:

sudo chown -R ec2-user /var/app/current

Make sure permissions on that entire folder were correct:

sudo chmod -R 755 /var/app/current

-rw-r—r— root root /etc/sysctl.conf

=== сервер ubuntu 20.04 ===
а также в файле /etc/ssh/sshd_config
PermitRootLogin yes
sudo systemctl restart sshd.service

=== filezilla ===

Current directory is /

cd /home/yourusername
