An ASPI layer being a universal set of commands foregoes the need of directly controlling CD functions. Appearance of Atapi devices made this inevitable. Aspi is an integral part of DVD.
Windows 2000 by default comes with a incomplete ASPI set (two files out of four) due to a Microsoft disagreement with Adaptec. Adaptec retaliates through totally false declarations that an ASPI layer cannot be installed safely on Windows 2000.
All Microsoft Windows products considers CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD drives as SCSI devices. To transfer command to those SCSI devices a set of command similar to SCSI has to be used. Three such sets were developed and the latest one being by Adaptec became an industry standard. The first two were more complete and efficient one was offered as proprietary the other as freeware.
Adaptec developed ASPI (Adaptec SCSI Proprietary Interface) with much the poorest set of commands. To force this set as a standard they bought out the company that developed the efficient freeware one to and removed it from the market. There followed their numerous Court fights against burning sofware houses forcing them to develop their own solutions (Ahead’s Nero, Blindwrite).

I have just made the jump to Win XP and so far I love it, but I’m having a little problem. Here is my error message: CDRwin
Error: Unable to initialize the ASPI manager I tried installing ASPI.zip from Q49 of the DVD2SVCD Q & A but I still get the same error message when starting the program. Has any 1 else have experance with this? Thank you for all the help in advance.

I myself use a program called ForceAspi which I downloaded off the net you can just do a basic search for it in yahoo ect. |

I didn’t try forceASPI after reading Q49. Basicly says use forceASPI for Win2k and ASPI.zip for WinXP. So I tried the ASPI.zip to no avail but after reading you post I gave it a try. So now I have both of them installed and now every thing is working. Thank You. Problem solved.

Hi… we have installed new SAP blade server and IBM TS3100 Express tape library to internal fibre switch on IBM blade chassis and used zoning to connect tape library to server. I tested the tape library by just running a windows backup and restore. This was succesful. A backup was then attempted of the Oracle database using BRBACKUP but the following error message appears:
mt: unable to initialize ASPI manager
mt: using NT tape support
mt: opening ‘ /dev/mt0’ :No media in drive
Our SAP Basis guy sent me the following possible solution:
The output contains at least the following lines (if no errors occurred) by default:
mt: unable to initialize ASPI manager
mt: using NT tape support
The displayed message is no reason for concern. MT expects an ASPI Manager (Advanced SCSI Programming Interface). However, this is not required for operation on Windows, nor does it have to be installed. MT provides a restricted set of commands which is all you need for the backup.
If this type of error message occurs, check that the ASPI manager is installed, and deinstall it if this is the case.

I’ve been searching the net but cannot find a tool that will either uninstall or inform me of any ASPI layer that may be installed on «Windows 2003 server 64-bit». Everything related to ASPI layer is usually for Win 98,XP, or 2000.
any help on this will be appreciated.

For Windows XP you need Apsi 4.70 get it and install. If it won’t install you need a program call «Force Aspi 1.7» Both should be easy to find on the Internet or e-mail me and I will send both. If your aspi layer is not working the program won’t work.

Well I now got the program to run, I upgraded to version 2.400, but now the proggy doesn’t recognise my drives! I got two plextor 16/10/40A burners which had always worked fine! Now Microstudio doesn’t see them! :((

Did you go into the MTU program and change to Use MTU Installed Divers? Click on Drives, ASPI drivers, make the change, and reboot(it says to exit Microstudio and reenter), I prefer reboot. George

Mike….. If your saying that the program still doesn’t see your Drives…. Sorry don’t know how you re-install or check these with XP, I have Win98SE and all I have to do is run SFC (System File Checker)….don’t know if XP has this or not. SFC is great or checking on corrupted, changed, or delete files and restoring them.

Could corrupted driver(s) be the cause even if I can burn perfectly with other programs such as nero or CDRWin, or even clone cd?The only one I’m getting the problems with is microstudio, and since I just paid $15 for the upgrade, it’s rather annoying, as you can imagine!

Corrupted Drivers…….Don’t think so….only if you were not able to see the CD-Rom Drives in the device manager. Don’t know if you have an ASPILOG.TXT file in XP, but take a look and see if it is «Empty» or is there something in it. If I remember correctly you said you ran the Aspi Checker and it said your Aspi Layer was not installed properly. Is this still the case. If the Aspi Layer isn’t working…..don’t think the program will work correctly. Did you every try the FORCE ASPI v1.7 PROGRAM?

Такая проблема: на компьютере есть две учётные записи, одна учётная запись — администратор компьютера и вторая ограниченная — опытные пользователи. Проблема в том, что в учётной записи опытные пользователи не пишутся диски, читать диски можно, но ни одна программа для записи дисководы не видит, одна из программ мне выдала следующее: Ошибка инициализации ASPI. Под администратором всё работает нормально. Подскажите пожалуйста в чём дело и как это исправить, чтобы под опытным пользователем также можно было писать диски.

Спасибо за советы, но я уже нашёл как это можно сделать проще через стандартные средства Windows XP, а именно так (если кому интересно):
Пуск -> Панель управления -> Администрирование -> Локальная политика безопасности -> Локальные политики -> Параметры безопасности -> и там есть ветка: Устройства: разрешить доступ к дисководам компакт дисков только локальным пользователям -> зайти в свойства и нажать «Включить», по умолчанию там стоит «Отключить». И всё будет работать.

I started getting the above message a week ago on my xp machine (it continues on to read ‘this may be a corrupt or missing file’).

I have just made the jump to Win XP and so far I love it, but I’m having a little problem. Here is my error message: CDRwin Error: Unable to initialize the ASPI manager I tried installing ASPI.zip from Q49 of the DVD2SVCD Q & A but I still get the same error message when starting the program. Has any 1 else have experance with this? Thank you for all the help in advance.

I myself use a program called ForceAspi which I downloaded off the net you can just do a basic search for it in yahoo ect. |

I didn’t try forceASPI after reading Q49. Basicly says use forceASPI for Win2k and ASPI.zip for WinXP. So I tried the ASPI.zip to no avail but after reading you post I gave it a try. So now I have both of them installed and now every thing is working. Thank You. Problem solved.

If you have PowerDVD that installs a fairly decent aspi driver as well. Mark |

An ASPI layer being a universal set of commands foregoes the need of directly controlling CD functions. Appearance of Atapi devices made this inevitable. Aspi is an integral part of DVD.
Windows 2000 by default comes with a incomplete ASPI set (two files out of four) due to a Microsoft disagreement with Adaptec. Adaptec retaliates through totally false declarations that an ASPI layer cannot be installed safely on Windows 2000.
All Microsoft Windows products considers CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD drives as SCSI devices. To transfer command to those SCSI devices a set of command similar to SCSI has to be used. Three such sets were developed and the latest one being by Adaptec became an industry standard. The first two were more complete and efficient one was offered as proprietary the other as freeware.
Adaptec developed ASPI (Adaptec SCSI Proprietary Interface) with much the poorest set of commands. To force this set as a standard they bought out the company that developed the efficient freeware one to and removed it from the market. There followed their numerous Court fights against burning sofware houses forcing them to develop their own solutions (Ahead’s Nero, Blindwrite).
