$ pacmd

Welcome to PulseAudio! Use "help" for usage information.
>>> list-sinks

aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav

sudo aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav

sudo aplay -l

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****

card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC861VD Analog [ALC861VD Analog]
  Subdevices: 0/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

aplay: device_list:221: no soundcard found...

sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel

sudo aplay -l

find /lib/modules/`uname -r` | grep snd

sudo apt-get install linux-restricted-modules-`uname -r` linux-generic

lspci -v | grep -A7 -i "audio"

Ubuntu.

There is an issue with Windows where the system doesn’t detect the sound card. Many users have recently reported that when they remove the Sound card and try to re-attach it, Windows doesn’t detect it anymore. The sound card works on other PCs but not the system it was previously used in.

Also, some users have said that Windows stopped detecting their sound cards after a Windows update. This is a serious issue as it prevents Windows from playing any sound. In this article, I have what to do when the sound card is not detected in Windows 10 and 11

Why Windows 10 Is Not Detecting Sound Card?

There can be various reasons why a sound card is not detected in Windows 10 and 11. Here are some possible causes for sound card not detecting:

  1. Corrupted or faulty sound drivers: Sound drivers are the link between the Windows and the sound card. When they become corrupted or turn faulty, Windows may not detect the Sound card.
  2. The Windows Audio Service is disabled: If the Windows Audio Service stops or becomes disabled, then such an issue can arise.
  3. Corrupted Windows update: Windows updates are essential for fixing patches and bugs. However, once in a while the Windows update may not install properly, which will in turn cause new bugs and errors. This can be the case here.
  4. Faulty PCI-E Slot: A faulty or broken PCI-E slot that you have plugged the sound card in can be the cause of this issue. Especially when the Sound card works on other PCs and not on yours.
  5. Faulty Sound Card: It is always possible that the Sound card has become faulty. Faulty sound cards won’t be detected by Windows.

Troubleshooting Sound Card Not Detected In Windows 10 Issue

Now that you know the various causes of this error, it is time to troubleshoot it. Here I have given various solutions that you can use to troubleshoot this issue. Follow them carefully and this issue should be fixed for you.

Windows audio service is responsible for all the sounds output. If for some reason this service has disabled, you will find that no sound device detected on your PC. To change the Windows Audio service, follow the steps given below:

  1. Open the Run utility again.
  2. Type services.msc and press Enter to open the Services app.
  3. Scroll down and locate the Windows Audio service.
  4. Double-click on the Windows Audio service to open its properties.
  5. In the General tab, change the Startup type to Automatic.
  6. Select the Start option and click on Apply and OK to save the changes.

If the Startup type of Windows Audio Service was already set to Automatic, then try restarting the service. To do it, follow the steps given below:

  1. Open the Services app again and navigate to the Windows Audio service.
  2. Right-click on the service and select the Restart option.

Now, check if still the sound card is not detected in Windows 10 and 11. This solution should fix the issue if it was due to disabled audio service.

Solution 4: System Restore

If system restore is enabled on your PC and you have saved a previous restore point before this error appeared, then you can restore to it. By restoring to a previous system point, you should be able to get rid of this error. To restore to a previous system point, follow the steps given below:

  1. Type Create a restore point in the start menu and select the top result. The System Properties will open on your screen.

Solution 6: Reset Windows

If nothing works, then all you can do is reset your PC. To reset your PC, follow the steps given below:

  1. Insert a bootable media or Windows installation media.
  2. Enter the Language and time zones appropriately.
  3. Click on the Repair my computer option located in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  4. Select the Troubleshoot option.
  5. Click on the Reset this PC option.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.

Reset-PC

If even resetting the PC doesn’t work, then you may have to reinstall Windows to fix this issue.

Solution 7: Check Hardware

If the above solutions don’t work, it seems that it is a hardware issue. Check if the PCI-E slot is broken or malfunctioning. Take your PC to a service center for a checkup if you are unable to do so yourself. Also, check whether the Sound card is working on other PCs or not. If it doesn’t work on other PCs also, then it has likely broken. In such a case, you will have to buy a new sound card.

  • Did you face this problem in previous build too?

Open Action Center and under troubleshoot run sound troubleshooter.

Use Feedback App and report this issue.

  • Sound was not an issue with build 9841 after installing audio drivers.

with update to 9879 sound card was present but not functioning.

following instructions outlined in previous post. sound card went away.

sound trouble shooter could not find an issue.

Have re installed build 9841 and sound card is working.

will wait for next update to see what happens then.

  • Hi James,

If you look in Device Manager do you see any problems?

    Thanks,

    John W [MSFT]

  • Hello John,

    Thank you for your reply.

Yes, under unknown device there are four items marked with exclamation marks inside of yellow triangle.

    the items are

    1. base system device.

    2. base system device.

    3. coprocessor.

    4. unknown device.

I believe these error notations refer to the processor as they were also evident in earlier versions of

    O S.

    sound worked with win 8.1

There are no notations next to sound video and gaming controller.

  • Also John,

Please note that this is a re-install of tech 10 preview build 9879 as

i lost sound card entirely with attempts to fix in last failed version of 9879.

    Thanks.

  • It’s strange that you’re not at least seeing an unknown device for the audio card. What type of machine is this, and what type of sound hardware?

    Thanks!

    John W [MSFT]

  • This is a revived (found in trash and repaired) H P Pavilion DV9700 and Conextant smart audio 221 .

Also, has windows 7 and win 8.1 on dive 1 and this tech preview on drive 0.

Both of the other OS s function perfectly .

  • So it’s clearly not a hardware issue, but the OS can’t see the audio device. Strange.

For the most part I agree with your assessment of the devices with the exclamation marks, but I’m curious about the hardware ID of the «unknown device». Could you check that one and let me know?

Also, have you tried right-clicking the PC in Device Manager and scanning for hardware changes? I don’t expect a change but it’s good to eliminate the possibility.

    Thanks!

    John W [MSFT]

  • This is what is stated in events tab of properties of unknown device: Driver Management has concluded the process to add Service mirrorv3 for Device Instance ID ROOTDISPLAY000 with the following status:
    0. No listing of hardware id. Perhaps this is refering to Remote Administrator software that was installed in previous preview. 87xx? forget what number actually.

Perhaps I should mention that opening volume mixer displays no (0) applications.

  • One other curious bit of info…playback properties shows 2 devices, spdif interface and of course speakers.

test button shows no effect with speakers device but DOES with spdif interface.

  • If you can see playback devices then we should have something in the DxDiag. Could you re-run that and see if any audio endpoints are shown?

Also, when you say the test button shows no effect do you mean the meters don’t move with «speakers» but do move with SPDIF?

    Thanks!

    John W [MSFT]

  • Yes John, that is correct. No meter movement when testing speakers but does move when testing spdif.

Get DxDiag error «error getting sound info» pop up

  • However under sound tab of dxdiag it reports no problem. Strange no?

  • It sounds like Plug-and-Play has gotten into a bad state with respect to this audio driver, i.e. it’s partly there but not completely. If I understand correctly you don’t have an audio device showing in Device Manager, right?

The options to clean this up would be to reinstall the Conexant driver from HP’s web site, which I think you’ve already tried in the past. Otherwise forcing a swap to the inbox HdAudio driver might help (as described here:

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/matthew_van_eerde/archive/2010/08/23/troubleshooting-how-to-install-the-microsoft-hd-audio-class-driver.aspx however you need to see the audio device in Device Manager for this.

If neither of these work then the shortest path is unfortunately probably to reinstall 9879.

    Let me know. Thanks!

  • What is shown on the Sound tab of DxDiag?

  • Device manager does show sound without an error flag.

Which is where the conextant info is from.

Identical to the other 2 OS.

    sound tab states:

    under device heading,

name: speakers conxtant high def smart audio 221

    under drivers field it states:

    Thanks!

  • Hey John!   It worked! (sorta). I now have sound. Thank You and Matt.

following tutorial from above provided link has restored sound to my aging P C.

Alas, sound card with this driver does not recognize the on-board mics.

Recording devices/recording tap shows «microphone not plugged in».

«show disconnected / disabled devices» are both checked.

    No other devices are listed.

Thank you John for your patience and help.

And a big thank you to Matt.

  • Glad to hear it!

I recently installed Arch Linux on my DELL Inspiron 7591, and I don’t get sound anymore from the speakers or from earphones. Sound is said to be getting redirected to a dummy output.

But if I connect Bluetooth earphones, that works.

I went through a few forum posts and understood nothing. This is an output of a few things that people have asked for on those forums

The kernel doesn’t detect it as well.
