Re-opening this thread as there’s more to this problem than just codecs.
TL;DR version: Try shortening the directory path.
— I exported files to Media Encoder from AE2023 (win10), created mp4s, and replaced my original .mov source in my AE project (archiving project, so I’m downsampling footage).
— Upon re-open, all the newly replaced files (now mp4) have the «unsupported or corrupt» error.
— Moved half of the suspect files to the desktop and re-linked successfully. Unmoved half still have error.
— Moved same files back to original location in the collected (Footage) folder, and error returns for all mp4s
— Closed AE and made a duplicate of the entire Collected project folder. Re-opened copied folder with same errors
— Moved project folder a few folders up in my hierarchy and opened — NO ERRORS. — Closed and Quit AE.
— Moved project folder back to the original location
— Delete aforementioned «copy» of project but receive an error that «file names are too long for Recycle Bin» and «Folder is currently in use — can’t delete». (hmmm. This is suspicious)
— Systematically reduce the length of folder names in file path, saving approximately 50 characters.
— File opens with fewer mp4 errors. (10 instead of 15)
— Truncate/abbreviate folders even further. File opens with NO ERRORS.
This is actually a problem I had once before as well, and while it’s definitely a «directory path too long» problem in my case, it’s still unclear if it’s specific to Windows 10, and/or Dropbox, both of which I’m working inside of. When I had the problem before, it occurred with a Dropbox ‘shared’ folder from a mac-based client who was not experiencing any errors. This suggests it may be a Windows-only problem. Shortening that directory path was even more difficult since it wasn’t even my directory!

Hello Adobe, I have been trying to fix this for days but I don´t found a solution. Adobe After Effects doesn´t import any file. I have Quicktime installed. The same happens with Premire Pro.

Hey!
I’ve been facing the same issue when trying to import screen recordings (.mov) into after effects. And I could not import it into adobe media encoder either.
2 quick fixes I found are:
1) You might need to download Quicktime for this. Open your video in Quicktime and go to file>export>1080(or choose any resolution you want), follow the instructions, give it a name and export! You will now be able to use this video in after effects CC 2020.
You can take it one step further and convert this new file to MP4 in adobe media encoder. I did this as I find it less of a hassle to work with MP4 files than .mov files in both AE CC 2019 & 2020. I’m not sure if there’s any actual merit to doing this but in the past when I’ve worked with .mov files, the footage would be purple and green when I’d open the project months later. But this didn’t happen to the MP4 files in the same composition or project.
2) If it’s a short video and you don’t have Quicktime or can’t download it ut you have good enoguh internet to do other stuff, you could try this way. I reeeeally don’t reommend this method for obvious reasons but if you absolutely need to get your footage into after effects and create a video real fast, you can use this method. Convert your video on any online video converting website and import the converted video into your composition. The quickest way I could find was converting it to MP4 and then importing this new converted MP4 into my composition. But this method is quite shady and not very reliable for big files. Use the first one!

I’m having the same problem with After Effects and some problems with Preimere. I can not import MP4 files most of the time. I have been on the phone for hours trying to get Adobe to fix it but they have no solution. I installed 2019 and it worked, then 2021 so starting working in 2021 assuming it would be OK. I spent a few days editing a project, then in the end I could import videos again. I called it up in 2019 and half the videos didn’t play. When I tried to export it there were little glitches in the video that weren’t there before. Now I can’t make any changes to it. You need to fix this software!!

Please help. I’ve done an upgrade from AE 17.4 to 17.6. That is all nothing else changed, same Windows 10 version, same quicktime. Now I get a bunch of errors I did not this morning. 86::1 for all my .mov and bunch of 48 :: 72. Basically the update has bricked AE.

I’ve tried uninstalling an installing 17.5.1, but the problem persists. Uninstall and manualy removed any AE CC2020 folders from documents and Program files then rolled back all the way to 17.1.1.
Seems to be working for now.
Lost half the day troubleshooting. Great!

Same problem since 2 weeks ago, cannot import .mov, everything is updated. I even formated my PC for a solution but I had the same problem. Sadly Adobe doesn`t answer my call but at the end of the month the payment will be done with no failures. P.D: I have 5-6 friends with similar issues with codecs or exports.

Same Issue. I created a video on my PC in After Effects a week ago. Needed to make an update to it today and it would not import any mp4 files.
this '.mp4' file is damaged or unsupported.
"After Effects error : Could not open source file. Please check that file exists with correct permissions. (86 ::1 )"
After Affects upgraded between that time. I had to backtrack one version 17.7 to 17.6.0 to correct the issue. Now I’m worried about upgrading again as I need to go back to videos to edit them for other purposes.

Using AfterEffects 2021 — My situation was that the videos were already imported and were working…nothing changed I have even exported the entire project with compositions and no issues for 3 weeks. Then suddenly I am getting this 86-1 issue on 2 videos from Envato Elements (yet I used 4 videos from there). Whatever found a fix.
Solution: I take the MP4 files that are getting flagged and convert them to MP4 (H.264) again through Media Encoder 2020. Boom no warnings when imported after getting reconverted to MP4’s.
No idea what patch/updated happened that caused AE to freak out on the videos but now everything is working like it used to.

Please change file name extention like ( avi , flv )
it will work .. if you are using windows 10 ,
= first select the video then goto view and check file name extention… then rename the video.

I’ve seen this behaviour on Windows using OneDrive. Slightly renaming the file to, like changing spaces to dashes solved it. Very odd issue. It affected both Ae and Pr.

Same Issue. I created a video on my PC in After Effects a week ago. Needed to make an update to it today and it would not import any mp4 files.
this '.mp4' file is damaged or unsupported.
"After Effects error : Could not open source file. Please check that file exists with correct permissions. (86 ::1 )"
After Affects upgraded between that time. I had to backtrack one version 17.7 to 17.6.0 to correct the issue. Now I’m worried about upgrading again as I need to go back to videos to edit them for other purposes.

Using AfterEffects 2021 — My situation was that the videos were already imported and were working…nothing changed I have even exported the entire project with compositions and no issues for 3 weeks. Then suddenly I am getting this 86-1 issue on 2 videos from Envato Elements (yet I used 4 videos from there). Whatever found a fix.
Solution: I take the MP4 files that are getting flagged and convert them to MP4 (H.264) again through Media Encoder 2020. Boom no warnings when imported after getting reconverted to MP4’s.
No idea what patch/updated happened that caused AE to freak out on the videos but now everything is working like it used to.

Please change file name extention like ( avi , flv )
it will work .. if you are using windows 10 ,
= first select the video then goto view and check file name extention… then rename the video.

I’ve seen this behaviour on Windows using OneDrive. Slightly renaming the file to, like changing spaces to dashes solved it. Very odd issue. It affected both Ae and Pr.

нет. Он должен иметь файлы в системной папке, а не на одном из моих быстрых дисков. Странно. Кажется, я не могу найти обходного пути.
Файлов очень много, а мой системный диск недостаточно велик.

Решалось ли это когда-нибудь? У меня такая же проблема. Я могу подтвердить, что копирование одного файла на рабочий стол, а затем обратно решает проблему. Однако у меня более 3К файлов, и делать это для каждого файла было бы слишком много времени.

Решалась ли эта проблема? У меня такая же проблема. Я могу подтвердить, что копирование si ngle на рабочий стол, а затем обратно, устраняет проблему. Однако у меня более 3К файлов, и делать это для каждого файла было бы слишком много времени.

Имея ту же ошибку, но в зависимости от имени файла, пытаюсь загрузить jpgs в мой проект, все сохраненные из одного файла, все с одинаковыми именами, заканчивающимися на 01, 02 , 03 и т. Д. И т. Д. Файл 01 не загружается. Ошибка: «У этого источника неправильный заголовок». Я меняю имя и т. Д., Не повезло …

Только что прошел тьфу это. Файлы имеют неправильные разрешения, которые можно исправить только AFAIK, скопировав каждый файл на рабочий стол и заменив. Затем вы можете переместить файлы с рабочего стола в новую папку и снова заменить в AE. Вы не можете перемещать папку с активами на рабочий стол, только по одному файлу за раз. Занимает много времени, но работает.

Только что прошел через это. У файлов неправильные разрешения, которые можно только исправить AFAIK, скопировав каждый файл на рабочий стол и заменив. Затем вы можете переместить файлы с рабочего стола в новую папку и снова заменить в AE. Вы не можете перемещать папку с активами на рабочий стол, только по одному файлу за раз. Занимает много времени, но работает.

Это вне меня, но обсуждение в чате с техническим специалистом Adobe помогло нам найти это решение. Мой проект был создан другим композитором. Я попытался скопировать папки с активами на другие диски int и ext, а также изменить разрешения (Windows 7), но ничего не помогло. Рабочие столы священны.

У меня сегодня проблема со стандартом. jpg. Я пробовал:
- Открытие исходного AI-файла и его повторный экспорт – все равно возникает ошибка
- Открытие файла. jpg в Photoshop и “сохранить как” .jpg. – по-прежнему получать ошибку
- Открытие файла .jpg в новом проекте. – по-прежнему получать ошибку
- Переименование файла .jpg в pleasepleaseimport.jpg. – по-прежнему возникает ошибка.
- Переименование файла .jpg в davidsimonsisgod.jpg. – все еще возникает ошибка

Да, но если вы откроете в Photoshop и сохраните в другом формате (например, PSD), все должно работать нормально.
Просто обратите внимание, это действительно большое изображение. Если вам на самом деле не нужны все эти пиксели в Ae, вы можете подумать об обрезке или масштабировании в Photoshop, чтобы немного облегчить нагрузку на Ae.

im really facing the problem of 86:1 file format not supported glitch now can we pls get a soultion i mean whats the use of after effects if it cant take in an mp4 file or an avi file i mean fix the software…. Is this what we payed for?

Hello Adobe, I have been trying to fix this for days but I don´t found a solution. Adobe After Effects doesn´t import any file. I have Quicktime installed. The same happens with Premire Pro.
The error is:
After Effects error: Could not open source file. Please check that file exists with correct persmissions

Hey!
I’ve been facing the same issue when trying to import screen recordings (.mov) into after effects. And I could not import it into adobe media encoder either.
2 quick fixes I found are:
1) You might need to download Quicktime for this. Open your video in Quicktime and go to file>export>1080(or choose any resolution you want), follow the instructions, give it a name and export! You will now be able to use this video in after effects CC 2020.
You can take it one step further and convert this new file to MP4 in adobe media encoder. I did this as I find it less of a hassle to work with MP4 files than .mov files in both AE CC 2019 & 2020. I’m not sure if there’s any actual merit to doing this but in the past when I’ve worked with .mov files, the footage would be purple and green when I’d open the project months later. But this didn’t happen to the MP4 files in the same composition or project.
2) If it’s a short video and you don’t have Quicktime or can’t download it ut you have good enoguh internet to do other stuff, you could try this way. I reeeeally don’t reommend this method for obvious reasons but if you absolutely need to get your footage into after effects and create a video real fast, you can use this method. Convert your video on any online video converting website and import the converted video into your composition. The quickest way I could find was converting it to MP4 and then importing this new converted MP4 into my composition. But this method is quite shady and not very reliable for big files. Use the first one!

I’m having the same problem with After Effects and some problems with Preimere. I can not import MP4 files most of the time. I have been on the phone for hours trying to get Adobe to fix it but they have no solution. I installed 2019 and it worked, then 2021 so starting working in 2021 assuming it would be OK. I spent a few days editing a project, then in the end I could import videos again. I called it up in 2019 and half the videos didn’t play. When I tried to export it there were little glitches in the video that weren’t there before. Now I can’t make any changes to it. You need to fix this software!!

Hi Adobe
Please help. I’ve done an upgrade from AE 17.4 to 17.6. That is all nothing else changed, same Windows 10 version, same quicktime. Now I get a bunch of errors I did not this morning. 86::1 for all my .mov and bunch of 48 :: 72. Basically the update has bricked AE.

I’ve tried uninstalling an installing 17.5.1, but the problem persists. Uninstall and manualy removed any AE CC2020 folders from documents and Program files then rolled back all the way to 17.1.1.
Seems to be working for now.
Lost half the day troubleshooting. Great!

Same problem since 2 weeks ago, cannot import .mov, everything is updated. I even formated my PC for a solution but I had the same problem. Sadly Adobe doesn`t answer my call but at the end of the month the payment will be done with no failures. P.D: I have 5-6 friends with similar issues with codecs or exports.

Same Issue. I created a video on my PC in After Effects a week ago. Needed to make an update to it today and it would not import any mp4 files.
this '.mp4' file is damaged or unsupported.
"After Effects error : Could not open source file. Please check that file exists with correct permissions. (86 ::1 )"
After Affects upgraded between that time. I had to backtrack one version 17.7 to 17.6.0 to correct the issue. Now I’m worried about upgrading again as I need to go back to videos to edit them for other purposes.

Using AfterEffects 2021 — My situation was that the videos were already imported and were working…nothing changed I have even exported the entire project with compositions and no issues for 3 weeks. Then suddenly I am getting this 86-1 issue on 2 videos from Envato Elements (yet I used 4 videos from there). Whatever found a fix.
Solution: I take the MP4 files that are getting flagged and convert them to MP4 (H.264) again through Media Encoder 2020. Boom no warnings when imported after getting reconverted to MP4’s.
No idea what patch/updated happened that caused AE to freak out on the videos but now everything is working like it used to.

Please change file name extention like ( avi , flv )
it will work .. if you are using windows 10 ,
= first select the video then goto view and check file name extention… then rename the video.

I’ve seen this behaviour on Windows using OneDrive. Slightly renaming the file to, like changing spaces to dashes solved it. Very odd issue. It affected both Ae and Pr.

Using AfterEffects 2021 — My situation was that the videos were already imported and were working…nothing changed I have even exported the entire project with compositions and no issues for 3 weeks. Then suddenly I am getting this 86-1 issue on 2 videos from Envato Elements (yet I used 4 videos from there). Whatever found a fix.
Solution: I take the MP4 files that are getting flagged and convert them to MP4 (H.264) again through Media Encoder 2020. Boom no warnings when imported after getting reconverted to MP4’s.
No idea what patch/updated happened that caused AE to freak out on the videos but now everything is working like it used to.

Please change file name extention like ( avi , flv )
it will work .. if you are using windows 10 ,
= first select the video then goto view and check file name extention… then rename the video.

I’ve seen this behaviour on Windows using OneDrive. Slightly renaming the file to, like changing spaces to dashes solved it. Very odd issue. It affected both Ae and Pr.

- Если ошибка пропала, значит, она была в удаленных слоях композиции, отменяем удаление, и теперь удаляем только половину удаленных ранее слоев. И снова запускаем рендер.
- Если ошибка осталась, то продолжаем дальше удалять слои, упрощая проект.
Если ошибку вызывает что-то конкретное, рано или поздно мы найдем виновника таким методом. Я понимаю, что это долгий, муторный и неудобный способ, но если вы знаете лучше, то пишите мне, буду благодарен! 
А если ошибка возникает каждый раз в случайных местах композиции, то можно попробовать рендерить не готовое видео, а набор кадров Image Sequence. В After Effects есть несколько пресетов для этой цели под общим названием Multi-Machine Settings/Sequence в очереди рендера Render Queue.
В таком случае каждый кадр будет отдельным изображением на диске, и если рендер оборвется, вы не потеряете уже просчитанный готовый материал. А когда вы продолжите рендер (можно продублировать задание в очереди рендера Render Queue), After Effects пропустит уже существующие на диске кадры и начнет считать со следующего места. За это отвечает отдельная настройка в Render Settings — Skip existing files (allows multi-machine rendering) («Пропустить существующие файлы (позволяет осуществлять рендеринг на нескольких компьютерах)«).
Но, естественно, звук в таком виде не получится вывести из программы After Effects и придется потом дополнительно его считать как WAV файл без видео и объединять с набором отрендеренных кадров композиции. Их, конечно же, надо предварительно импортировать в любую программу для работы с видео — After Effects, Premiere Pro, да любую. Даже мой любимый FFMPEG может это сделать, да все нормальные программы умеют делать такое. Только проверьте частоту кадров, так как куча файлов на диске не имеет такой информации, и это надо задавать руками.
Вообще, это было сделано для рендеринга по сети несколькими компьютерами одновременно, чтобы они не считали одинаковые кадры, назначенные другому After Effects. А самое интересное, что такое можно провернуть и на одной машине для ускорения рендера, ведь одна копия After Effects не задействует ресурсы процессора CPU на полную.
