The too many redirects error is caused by two or more conflicting rules that prevent content delivery. So why does ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS occur? In short, this happens when one URL points to another which ends up pointing right back to the first.

As a result, the infamous redirection loop is created, causing your browser to display the error code: inet_e_redirect_failed or ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS instead of loading the website.

Now, the error message can vary according to the browser your currently using but it’s safe to say that you’re more likely to encounter it on Google Chrome. This is also why we will base our troubleshooting steps primarily on this browser.

Check out a few more examples:

  • Error code: inet_e_redirect_failed
  • ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS
  • Too_many_redirects , -310
  • Too many redirects WordPress/Laravel
  • Too many redirects Microsoft Edge, Chrome, Firefox, Safari (Redirection issues are not uncommon; For instance, Safari has had problems with its search engine redirecting to Yahoo without permission).

What causes too many redirects?

SSL/TLS certificate issues: missing/expired/invalid Incorrect settings at the website address level Incorrect CDN encryption mode
-Certificate is expired but automatic renewal is not enabled
-SSL domain validation failed
-Certificate is missing
The protocol used in the CMS (WordPress or others) competes with other redirects CDN server configuration does not meet requirements for end-to-end encryption when the switch is made.

Getting too many redirect errors in your browser can be frustrating as it prevents you from opening website pages.

Instead, the Google Chrome error message states: This webpage has a redirect loop…(ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS): There were too many redirects.

Obviously, you’d want to know how to fix too many redirects in Chrome, Edge, Safari, or other browsers. So, how do you fix too many redirects? Let’s find out together, read on!

  1. Check if the website is down
  2. Check your SSL certificate
  3. Open the page in another browser
  4. Adjust the Internet Time Settings
  5. Reset your browser
  6. Delete your browser’s cookies

Before we dig in, establish if the issue is related to your browser or your CMS (such as WordPress). According to the source, you may need to check these prerequisites:

  • ➡️ Reset your htaccess file and/or contact your hosting provider (CMS)
  • ➡️ Clear browser cache or reinstall it (Edge/Chrome/Firefox/Safari)

1. Check if the website is down

  1. Visit the Down for everyone or just me webpage.
  2. Enter the URL of the website in the text box on the page.
  3. Click on or just me.
  4. The website will tell you if the URL is down or not.

The website page might be down. The full redirect error message states that there might be a server configuration issue, which you can’t resolve yourself.

2. Check SSL certificate on the redirecting website

  1. Try to open the website that is giving you this error.
  2. Click the lock icon 🔒 in the address bar.
  3. Locate the Connection is secure option and click it to view more details.
  4. Finally, click on the certificate.
  5. If you don’t see this message or the lock icon, it means that the website is using an expired certificate.

3. Open the page in another browser

If the website is down just for you, try opening the page that’s returning the too many redirects error in another browser. This won’t really fix the issue for the original browser that the page isn’t opening in.

However, you can still browse the page if it opens in another browser. If you don’t know what to use, we recommend installing Opera.

This is an excellent browser both security and feature-wise. Opera blocks all trackers and ads which leads to a really smooth and fast browsing experience.

You can activate it with one click, it’s free and you can use it without any time limit. Opera also has a very intuitive and user-friendly UI that’s fully customizable.

⇒ Get Opera Browser

4. Adjust the Internet Time Settings

  1. Hit the Windows key, type Control Panel, then open the first result.
  2. Click on Clock and Region.
  3. Now, navigate to Date and Time.
  4. Select the Internet Time tab shown in the shot directly below, then press the Change settings.
  5. Select the Synchronize with an Internet time server option, and choose a server from the Server drop-down menu.
  6. Press the Update now button to sync the time and date.
  7. Press the OK button to close the window.

5. Reset your browser (Chrome, Edge, etc.)

  1. Hit the Windows key, type Chrome, then open the browser.
  2. Click the Customize Google Chrome button to open that browser’s menu (3-dots menu, located in the top-right corner of the window). Then, navigate to Settings.
  3. From the left window pane, click on Advanced, then click on Reset and clean up.
  4. Now, from the right side of the window, choose to Restore settings to their original defaults.
  5. Check if the issue persists.

As we mentioned, the too many redirects error can impact all browsers or CMS/Web builder systems.

We exemplified the browser reset browser procedure for Google Chrome, but you can do so on your particular browser. The steps are fairly similar.

6. Delete your browser’s cookies

  1. Download the CCleaner setup wizard.
  2. Open CCleaner’s setup wizard to add the software to Windows.
  3. Select Custom Clean from the left pane and click the Run Cleaner button.
  4. If you’re browsing with Chrome, Firefox, or other third-party browsers, select the Applications tab.
  5. Here you can select the exact browsers to clean. Don’t forget to check the Cookies box!
  6. If erasing the cookies doesn’t fix the issue, clear all your browser’s data by selecting the rest of its checkboxes in the CCleaner Cleaner utility.
  7. Press the Analyze and Run Cleaner buttons to erase all the data.

The full error message states that clearing browser cookies might resolve the issue, which is a big clue to coping with the situation. Most browsers include options to erase cookies and caches.

However, the freeware CCleaner is the safest way to erase cookies from Google Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera, and Edge. You can erase cookies with CCleaner by following the steps above.

🎯 Too many redirects WordPress [Quick Fix]

  1. Open your site’s WordPress dashboard in a browser.
  2. Click Settings on the left of the dashboard to open General Settings.
  3. The General Settings includes the WordPress Address (URL) and Site Address (URL) text boxes.
  4. If the URLs don’t match, edit the WordPress Address (URL) so that it exactly matches the Site Address.
  5. Delete slashes (/) included at the end of the URLs.

Also, note that some web hosts require webmasters to set up either a www or non-www URL for WordPress sites.

Both the URLs need to include www if you selected to add a www prefix to the domain when you set up the site (http://www.example.com).

If you opted for a non-www URL, then both the WordPress and site URL should be http://example.com. If you can’t recall what the domain setting for your site is, check with the web host provider.

In addition to checking your website’s redirection path in order to identify any potential conflicting redirects, make sure you also check your CMS’s third-party services and/or plugins.

As always, complementary modules can cause havoc and they are a likely trigger for the too many redirects error. Make sure to tell us if these solutions helped you solve the problem in the comment section below.

    Hi,

A common issue is misconfiguring authentication ie trying to go to a page and then being redirect to the login page which is not public causing then to be redirected again and again to the login page.

Use F12 Network in your browser (and the «preserve log» option) to see which page(s) are involved. If the login page is involved make sure anonymous users are authorized to access to the login page.
